Our Services

College is very exciting, but it can also be confusing and stressful. Classes, tests, work, family, and friends can place competing demands on your time and energy?and sometimes things just happen. It?s not surprising that many students find themselves at times feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or depressed. According to combined client intake data collected during the 2005-2006 fiscal year, new clients most often reported the following concerns:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Concentration Difficulties
  • Poor Study Skills
  • Sleep
  • Physical Problems
  • Loneliness
  • Academics
  • Romantic Relationships
  • Family Relationships

Students come to Counseling Services for a variety of reasons, including those listed above. Other reasons may have to do with stress, relationship problems, life purpose and direction, eating concerns, low self-confidence, sexual identity, decision making, family conflicts, self-defeating behaviors, abuse, trauma, etc.

Counseling can be an opportunity to talk about issues that are of concern to you with an objective person who can help you develop skills and view situations in ways that may enable you to be more effective in managing life's challenges down the road. Below is a list from the University of Buffalo Counseling Center of commonly shared reasons why a student might want to make use of a college Counseling Center.

The Counseling Center is a place to benefit from professional, experienced helpers.

  • Counselors are non-judgmental, objective helpers.
  • Counselors try to make you comfortable in talking, and they understand and help you with your initial anxiety.
  • Counseling in the Counseling Center involves the concerns and problems of normal students.
  • Lots of students are using the Counseling Center's services.
  • Initiating and remaining in counseling is voluntary.
  • All counseling is confidential. No information is released to anyone without written consent. The rare exception is when information is revealed about current or future harm to self or others.

Fees for Services

Counseling services are provided free of charge to all full-time students at Creighton. These services include therapy and many forms of assessments. However, a fee is charged for Learning Disability and ADHD diagnostic assessments. In addition, appointments with the psychiatrist are billed through the student's insurance.

Limitations of Our Services

Creighton's Counseling Services is an outpatient mental health service dedicated to treatment of enrolled Creighton undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Generally Counseling Services can treat the emotional difficulties and mental disorders that can safely be managed within the structure of an outpatient service. The services that Counseling Services can provide are: weekly individual counseling appointments (with no specific time limit), group counseling sessions when an appropriate group is running, access to psychiatric or general medical consultation for medication, and occasional crisis intervention meetings. There are certain mental health disorders that cannot be effectively treated within the structure and resources of Creighton's Counseling Services. Students that cannot be treated effectively or safely within this structure of resources will be referred to mental health resources within the community (in Omaha or in the student's home community). Situations that require referral include (but are not limited to) the following: symptoms of disorganized or disruptive psychoses and high suicidal potential requiring inpatient hospital treatment; serious eating disorders; chronic emotional crisis requiring intensive treatment, frequent appointments or special supervision or behavioral management.

Counseling Services office is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services, and its staff adheres to the ethical principles of the American Psychological Association. Our staff is committed to meeting the needs of all individuals regardless of culture, race, gender, ability, or sexual orientation.
